give us the option to disable the spotlight section.
Changes like this that arbitrarily promote content that is no more important to me than any of the other content I have personally requested be displayed on this personal RSS reader is why I stopped visiting my google reader.
Seriously, What made you think that adding visual annoyance, content redundancy and arbitrary (pay-for-play?) content promotion would be a good idea?
Let me make this clear: I want my content. Not your distillation. Not your advertising. Not some random amalgamation of "everyone else is looking at something that similar keyword to this article in your feed so we are highlighting it for you". Not even "you saved something like this so we are going to show you this more than other things!"
You are an RSS reader. Be good at that and let that be enough.
+1. super annoying.
+1 to removing the 'Popular' item at the top of my list of articles.
The new feature of adding "Popular" to the lop of "Most Recent" in the list view is an annoyance. At the very least there should be a way to turn this off.
As far as I'm concerned, there are four kinds of posts. (1) Post I haven't seen yet, (2) posts that I have read or deleted without reading, (3) posts that I have saved and (4) posts that I have noted the headline but not read yet (usually because it will take me longer to digest the content). The problem is that the "popular" ranking puts (3) and (4) ahead of (1), disturbing my sorting process and workflow.
BTW, It is completely unacceptable in the Magazine view, because I need to scroll UP to get to the next article. That is really bad UI design.

This random sorting foolishness is why I hate FaceBook... Don't make me hate you too. I'm still sad about Reader being gone and it's too difficult to take!
Agree.. hate the "Spotlight" at the top of my feeds!!! And btw, they rarely are the most interesting news of my feeds.. please, create an option to delete the "Spotlight" bar!!
100 percent, agree.
Stop to filter my feeds.
How do I turn this distracting feature off? If I skip an article, it's because it didn't interest me. I don't need old stuff popping up on top of my feed taking up valuable screen real estate.
Go to Preferences and Spotlight - disable there
Was very annoying but at least they did not force it on us for too long...

I agree. Keeping this "feature" would make me switch to another reader. Period. Kill this.
Saw the new spotlight thing today. Very annoying. Please tell me how I can remove it!
very annoying on a guttural level... I focus on what I want to focus on. Please add an option to remove.
Absolutely 1000 percent. NOT pleased. Who wants to be Facebook?????

Yes, please provide an option to disable spotlight.
In an ideal world, we would all be robots and you could predict what to spotlight for us. But in reality some of are not and we want just the feed with no space wasted on highlighting anything we didn't ask to be highlighted. Please eliminate your 'spotlight" grouping and let my feed be just chronological!

While I'm glad they provided the option to turn it off, I'm confused as to why it's even there in the first place in Title View.
What do I want? Google Reader. I can't have it, and Feedly's the closest thing. All I want is a chronological list. That's it. Nothing fancy. Nothing else. I just want functionality as close to Google Reader as possible.

All the social stuff is a total irrelevance to me. The engagement count is surely something that also ought to be able to be switched off.

Glad there's a preference now!
I dislike the spotlight only because it disrupts my reading. I want to just hit "j" and go to the next story. the spotlight keeps cycling me between the top three stories again and again. :(
i got adblock just to block that section out
